Directed by Atlee, ‘Jawan’ released theatrically on September 7 and went on to become a monster box office hit. The film grossed over ₹1,150 crore worldwide, with the Hindi version alone collecting ₹590 crore nett in India.
‘Jawan’ Smashes Box Office Records in India and Overseas
‘Jawan’ managed to break numerous box office records held by Khan’s previous 2022 blockbuster ‘Pathaan’, which earned ₹543 crore domestically and ₹1,043 crore globally.
The action thriller surpassed ‘Pathaan’ to become the highest grossing Hindi film of 2022 in both the Indian and worldwide markets. However, the all-time top spot is still held by Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ which minted over ₹2,000 crore worldwide.
Co-starring Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone and Sanya Malhotra, ‘Jawan’ scored the biggest opening day ever for a Hindi film with ₹75 crore nett in India. It collected a mammoth ₹129.06 crore globally on day one.
The film achieved record-shattering success across multiple regions, including in the Tamil and Telugu versions which contributed significantly to the overall earnings.
Tamil Directors Dominate Year’s Top Grossers
Thanks to the pan-India success of ‘Jawan’, three of the five highest grossing Indian films of 2023 so far have been helmed by Tamil directors.
‘Jawan’ director Atlee tops the list, followed by Nelson’s ‘Jailer’ at number two, and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Leo’ at number three, according to noted trade analyst Sumit Kadel.
The other two spots are occupied by Hindi films – Khan’s ‘Pathaan’ at number four and the Kartik Aaryan-starrer ‘Shehzada’ at number five.
The outsized success of the three Tamil director-helmed movies underscores the rise of Kollywood filmmakers in Bollywood and pan-India cinema.
Shah Rukh Khan Preps for Christmas Release ‘Dunki’
On the heels of ‘Jawan’s record-smashing run, Shah Rukh Khan is now gearing up for the release of his next film ‘Dunki’ around Christmas this year.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-starring Taapsee Pannu, ‘Dunki’ is slated to be one of the major Hindi film releases of the holiday season.
The Netflix premiere of ‘Jawan’s extended cut on SRK’s birthday marks a new phase in the film’s journey after dominating the theatrical box office. Fans can now enjoy the extra footage from the comfort of their homes.
As Khan celebrates his 57th birthday, the superstar has cemented his unmatched star power with the back-to-back successes of ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’ in 2022-23. He will be hoping to continue his winning streak with ‘Dunki’ and future projects.
